The TESOL Centre
The TESOL (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Centre at Sheffield Hallam University has been running English language courses for international students since 1985.
The Centre is located in the City Campus of Sheffield Hallam University, in the centre of Sheffield and attracts over 500 students each year. All courses are taught by qualified and experienced teachers and are accredited by the British Council.
Courses Available
General English course for International Students
This English language course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their general and academic English. Students can choose between 15 or 21 hours of teaching per week and the course will help you to develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, enabling you to communicate in English in social and professional situations. The maximum number of students per class is 15. The courses run from January until September each year and minimum enrolment is 4 weeks.
Summer Academic English Preparatory Course
This new course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language skills for general and academic purposes, while experiencing life in Britain. This course is particularly useful if you need to reach the entry level for the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes programme. The course runs from July until August each year.
The course concentrates on:
- communication and fluency skills
- development and consolidation of language structure
- developing reading and written communication skills
- pronunciation practice
- vocabulary development
Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes
This course is for international students who are about to start an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Sheffield Hallam University or another university in the UK.
It aims to help you develop the academic English skills which you will need at university. The course has a summer intake (June to August) and autumn intake (September to December.)
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of spoken and written English in academic contexts
- demonstrate the English language study skills needed to successfully undertake a mainstream academic course
- communicate comfortably in everyday English using and recognising a wide range of language forms
- demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of British culture, both academic and social
IELTS Examination Preparation Course
This course is aimed at students who are planning to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) examination.
The examination can be taken at the TESOL centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Class sizes are restricted to 15 students, and students are given regular homework and self-study guidance to help practise and revise classwork.
The course aims to:
- equip you with techniques and strategies for taking the IELTS examination
- help you develop skills and techniques for the IELTS examination
- give you practice in tasks on all four modules of the IELTS examination (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
Accommodation
Intercambio and Sheffield Hallam University can arrange accommodation in home stay families or student Halls of Residences.
Activities
Students have access to the sports and recreational facilities of Sheffield Hallam University for the duration of the course. Some courses include a programme of social activities and visits to places of interest in and around Sheffield. There is an extra cost for some of these activities.
