The TESOL Centre

The TESOL (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Centre at Sheffield Hallam University has been running English language courses for international students since 1985.
The Centre is located in the City Campus of Sheffield Hallam University, in the centre of Sheffield. All courses are taught by qualified and experienced teachers and are accredited by the British Council.

Courses Available

English for International Students

This English language course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve the general and academic English. The course will help you to develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, enabling you to communicate in English in social and professional situations. The maximum number of students per class is 15, and students are encouraged to participate as much as possible.

Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes

This course is for international students who are about to start an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Sheffield Hallam University or another university in the UK. It aims to help you develop the academic English skills which you will need at university.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of spoken and written English in academic contexts
use spoken and written English in academic contexts
demonstrate the English language study skills needed to undertake successfully a mainstream academic course
communicate comfortably in everyday English using and recognising a wide range of language forms
demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of British culture, both academic and social

Academic English Preparatory Course

This new course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language skills for general and academic purposes, while experiencing life in Britain. The aim of the course is communication through English. This course is particularly useful if you need to reach the entry level for the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes programme.

The course concentrates on:

communication and fluency skills
development and consolidation of language structure
developing reading and written communication skills
pronunciation practice
vocabulary development

International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) Examination Preparation Course

This course is aimed at students who are planning to take the IELTS examination. The examination can be taken at the TESOL centre at Sheffield Hallam University. Class sizes are restricted to 15 students, and students are given regular homework and self-study guidance to help practise and revise classwork.

The course aims to:

equip you with techniques and strategies for taking the IELTS examination
help you develop skills and techniques for the IELTS examination
give you practice in tasks on all four modules of the IELTS examination

Accommodation

For some English language courses the university can arrange accommodation in home stay families, in university residences or in private self-catered residence.

Activities

Students have access to the sports and recreational facilities of the university for the duration of the course. Some courses include a programme of social activities and visits to places of interest in and around Sheffield. There is an extra cost for some of these activities.
