The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is one of the leading universities in the UK and Europe and independent rankings consistently place Sheffield in the top 100 world universities rankings.
Newsweek magazine ranked Sheffield in 2006 9th in the UK, 18th in Europe and 70th in the worldand the Times Higher Education Supplement rated Sheffield in November 2007 12th in the UK, 22nd in Europe and 68th in the world.
The University and attracts a high number of applications from both British and international students. The university has over 25,000 students including more than 3,700 international students from 120 countries. The University grew out of the Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School (1884). These three institutions came together in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield in 1905. 70 Academic Departments and Sections are grouped in the 7 Faculties (Architectural Studies, Arts, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Pure Science, Social Sciences) which include a number of special research units. The Virgin 2007 Alternative Guide to British Universities says that “Sheffield is a top university across the board”. 5 Nobel prizes have been associated with the University.
Teaching Excellence
The quality of teaching at the University has been confirmed in the latest QAA (Quality Assurance Assessment) which was carried out in 2001. The University has the third-highest number of subjects rated "excellent" – scoring 22 or more points out a possible 24 – for teaching quality among all UK universities.
Research Excellence
In the 2001 Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Research Assessment Exercise, 35 out of the University's 48 subjects (73%) attained the top two grades, 5 and 5*, which are reserved for research of international standards of excellence, the sixth highest of any UK university.
Research partners and clients include Boeing, Rolls Royce, Unilever, Boots, AstraZeneca, GSK, ICI, Slazenger, and many more household names, as well as UK and overseas government agencies and charitable foundations.
Academic partners include leading universities around the world. Sheffield is also part of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and the White Rose Consortium (a partnership with Leeds and York Universities) which has a combined research power greater than that of either Oxford or Cambridge.
