The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC)

The English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) in Sheffield is part of the University of Sheffield, one of the UK's top universities, and a centre of excellence in its own right. In January 2011 the leading English language and international education newspaper 'EL Gazette' named the ELTC as a 'Centre of Excellence,' underlining the ELTC's committment to quality. It is one of only 2 university language teaching centres in the whole of the UK that have been awarded this honour. The ELTC offers a wide range of English language courses which are all accredited by the British Council.

About the English Language Teaching Centre

ELTC, School BuildingThe ELTC operates from a brand new building in the centre of Sheffield, near the university campus and facilities at the ELTC include modern classrooms with state of the art teaching equipment, computer and listening laboratories as well as audio-visual equipment and resources. Staff have experience of teaching international students in a wide range of locations and situations, both in the UK and overseas.

The centre organises general English courses suitable for students who wish to study for a short period in a university environment. For students that wish to prepare for study at a UK university there is the Academic English Preparatory Course which runs throughout the year. This full-time intensive course is designed to help students reach an appropriate level of proficiency in English for entry into their university department. Students are tested on arrival and then placed in a suitable class. The course is also particularly suitable for students who need to pass the IELTS test for university entry. An optional IELTS practice class provides further training in exam techniques. In addition, the course introduces students to the British way of life, the education system and the methods of study (seminars, projects) commonly found in universities in Britain. Students also have the opportunity to do the University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test (USEPT) instead of an IELTS exam for those seeking entry at the University of Sheffield.

ELTC, International Summer School studentsThe ELTC also offers Management English courses which are suitable for students who would like to improve their knowledge of English in a business or management context. Management English courses are also useful preparation for students intending to study management and business-related academic courses such as the MBA and MSc in Management.
