About The Sheffield College

Sheffield College, City College BuildingThe Sheffield College is based in the city centre of Sheffield, a city well known for being one of the most relaxed and friendly cities in the UK. Sheffield has a very large student population and as such is a very 'young' city. The English language courses are offered from the brand-new City College building, conveniently located in the city centre.

Apart from general English courses the college offers IELTS (International English Language Testing System), University of Cambridge ESOL examinations and a Business English Certificate. Students will be taught by a team of highly qualified and experienced EFL tutors and English teachers and all programmes include an attractive sports and social events programme. Accommodation can be provided as part of any study programme.

The Sheffield College, Student GroupThe general English courses are full-time courses that run throughout the year and students can enrol for one year, half a year, 3 months or just a few weeks, as required. On arrival, students are given an assessment test and placed in a group best suited to their needs (beginner, elementary, intermediate or advanced.) Special programmes can also be designed for groups or individuals. Students study for 18 hours per week and classes take place each morning and in the afternoon at the Sheffield City College building in the centre of Sheffield. Students will attend skill based classes such as writing, IELTS preparation and exam practice and will also be able to opt for Business English, individual speaking practice and internet sessions. The Sheffield College also runs a unique online IELTS course for students from overseas.

The summer school offers general English courses to international students at any level (beginner, elementary, intermediate or advanced) and students are assessed on arrival to ascertain their level of English before being places in an appropriate group. Progress is monitored constantly so that students can gain the maximum benefit from their stay in Sheffield. Formal classes take place for 18 hours each week (Monday to Friday) and there is usually a full day excursion each Saturday and a half day activity each weekday. The Summer School is for people with a limited amount of time to make rapid progress in English, learn about the British way of life and spend an enjoyable summer in Sheffield and England. Students can use this time to improve their IELTS score or take the IELTS exam for the first time at the end of their course.

Accommodation

Students have a choice of living with a host family, student accommodation or renting private accommodation. English language students are advised to live with a hostfamily as this will greatly help to practice their English outside the classroom. The Sheffield College and Intercambio can also help arrange accommodation in a student halls of residence.

Homestay (Standard)

  • A standard single study bedroom in a family’s house. Students will get their own set of keys so you can come and go as you please.
  • Students stay on a Half Board basis (Breakfast + Dinner will be provided plus lunch at the weekends.)
  • Bed linen and towels are provided.
  • All utility charges and cleaning are included.
  • All host families are within walking distance or a short bus-ride of the school.
  • Host families will encourage students to speak English whenever possible.
  • Your accommodation will be changed as soon as possible if you are unhappy for any reason.

Student Halls of Residence

  • The Sheffield College, Student Halls of ResidenceA standard single room in cluster of flats in a shared building.
  • Students will get their own set of keys so you can come and go as you please.
  • All rooms are en-suite having their own private bathroom.
  • As it is self-catering the flats have access to a shared kitchen equipped with cooker and fridge.
  • Many other facilities may be available to students depending on the residence.Bed linen can be provided against a small fee.
  • The Sheffield College, Student Halls of ResidenceFree internet connection (via your own laptop) provided although a small connection fee may apply.
  • All utility charges are included. Cleaning of central areas is included.
