Undergraduate programmes

Undergraduate courses in the UK generally last for 3 years of full time study, although some courses can last 4 years.

The qualification gained at the end of an undergraduate degree is called a Bachelor’s Degree . The two most common degrees are a BA ( Bachelor of Arts )and a BSc ( Bachelor of Science) but some subjects have their own specific name such as the  LLB (Bachelor of Law) or MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery).

Each course has different entry criteria, but in order to study for a Bachelor’s degree you must usually have studied at high school up to the age of 18 and gained good qualifications in relevant subjects, plus a good level of English.

For Mexican students this means that you must have passed the Bachillerato with good grades. Sometimes students study the British A-Levels abroad or follow the International Bachalaureate (IB) at an international school.

Foundation study

Some universities in the UK offer foundation courses for students either from the UK or abroad who do not have the necessary qualifications to begin a university Bachelor course.

Foundation programmes usually last one year and the aim is to prepare students for entry on to a university Bachelor course.
The University of Sheffield offers 1 year foundation courses through their Sheffield International College.

Courses are available in Business, law and Social Science and Sciences and Engineering in preparation for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. If you successfully complete your foundation course you are guaranteed entry on to the course of your choice.
