Undergraduate programmes

Undergraduate courses in the UK normally take 3 or 4 years to complete although some courses can take 5 years.

The qualification gained at the end of an undergraduate course is called a Bachelor degree. The two most common degrees are a BA (Bachelor of Arts) and a BSc (Bachelor of Science) but some subjects have their own specific name such as the LLB (Bachelor of Law) or MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.)

Each course and each university has different entry criteria, but in order to study a Bachelor course you must normally have completed your pre-university education (e.g. High School) and gained good qualifications and grades in subjects relevant to the subject you will study at your Bachelor course.

Obviously, if you're thinking of studying a Bachelor course in the UK you need to have a good command of the English language as well. In order to prove that your English is good enough to succeed on the course you are normally expected to take an English test such as the IELTS or TOEFL exam. Most universities set strict minimum English language requirements for overseas students but there are different requirements depending on the course and university.

Foundation study

Some universities in the UK offer Foundation courses for students either from the UK or abroad who do not have the necessary qualifications to be directly accepted onto a university Bachelor course.

Foundation courses usually last from a few months up to one year depending on how well you did in your High School exams and the aim is to prepare students for entry into the first year of a university Bachelor course.

Foundation courses are available in most disciplines such as Business, Law, Social Science and the Sciences and Engineering.
Most Foundation courses come with the guarantee that upon successful completion of your Foundation course you are guaranteed first year entry on the course of your choice.
